About Us

The Smart Cities Innovation Challenge 2026 is organized to foster collaboration between innovators, startups, academia, industry, and public sector organizations in developing technology-driven solutions for urban challenges. The initiative aims to accelerate digital transformation, improve public services, enhance sustainability, and build resilient cities that offer a higher quality of life for citizens.

The Smart Cities Innovation Challenge 2026 is a national innovation competition that brings together developers, startups, students, researchers, and technology professionals to solve real-world urban challenges through emerging technologies. Participants will design scalable solutions across urban mobility, waste management, citizen services, and smart infrastructure using Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), GIS, Cloud Computing, APIs, and Data Analytics. The hackathon encourages innovation that improves urban efficiency, sustainability, and citizen experiences while shaping the future of connected cities.

Problem Statements

The Smart Cities Innovation Challenge 2026 invites participants to develop innovative, technology-driven solutions that address critical urban challenges and improve the quality of life for citizens. Participants can choose one of the following problem statements, each focused on leveraging emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), GIS, Cloud Computing, Data Analytics, and APIs to create scalable, secure, and sustainable solutions for smarter cities.

AI-powered Citizen Services & Urban Governance

Develop an AI-enabled citizen services platform that simplifies access to government services, grievance management, urban reporting, and civic engagement.

Citizens increasingly expect faster, transparent, and accessible public services. However, many urban governance processes remain fragmented, manual, and difficult to navigate, leading to delayed service delivery and limited citizen engagement.

Participants are invited to build an AI-powered citizen services platform that enables residents to access municipal services through a single digital interface. Solutions may include AI chatbots, multilingual virtual assistants, digital grievance management, infrastructure issue reporting, service request tracking, public feedback systems, predictive analytics for city planning, digital permits, emergency notifications, and citizen engagement dashboards.

The solution should improve service accessibility, enhance transparency, strengthen communication between citizens and local authorities, and enable evidence-based decision-making through real-time analytics.

Intelligent Urban Mobility & Traffic Management

Develop a smart mobility platform that leverages AI, IoT, GIS, and real-time traffic data to improve transportation efficiency, reduce congestion, and enhance commuter experiences.

Urban areas continue to face increasing traffic congestion, inefficient public transportation, road safety concerns, and limited visibility into transportation networks. These challenges lead to longer travel times, higher fuel consumption, increased emissions, and reduced quality of life.

Participants are invited to design an intelligent mobility solution that integrates real-time traffic information, GPS data, connected infrastructure, and predictive analytics to improve transportation efficiency. Solutions may include AI-based traffic signal optimization, smart parking systems, multimodal journey planning, public transport optimization, congestion prediction, incident detection, EV charging availability, or integrated mobility platforms.

The proposed solution should enhance commuter experiences, improve operational efficiency for city authorities, support sustainable transportation, and enable data-driven urban mobility planning.

Smart Waste Management & Circular Economy

Develop an intelligent waste management platform that uses AI, IoT, and analytics to optimize waste collection, segregation, recycling, and environmental sustainability.

Rapid urbanization has significantly increased municipal waste generation, creating challenges in waste collection, segregation, transportation, recycling, and landfill management. Traditional waste management approaches often lack real-time visibility, resulting in inefficient collection schedules, increased operational costs, and environmental impacts.

Participants are challenged to develop intelligent solutions that improve the entire waste management lifecycle. Solutions may include IoT-enabled smart bins, route optimization for waste collection vehicles, AI-powered waste segregation, recycling incentive platforms, citizen engagement applications, landfill monitoring, carbon footprint tracking, or circular economy marketplaces.

The solution should improve operational efficiency, reduce environmental impact, encourage citizen participation, and support sustainable urban development.
